Levity Shawl

This vintage-style shawl is ideal for lovers of garter stitch.
Wrap yourself up and take in some theatre at the park or go for a whimsical stroll.

This shawl is made in two sections: the first is a crescent shape made up of garter stitch and the second is “knitted on” to the first section so there is no seaming.
The lacey “rays” pattern is very easy, but fun to make (and looks really impressive!).

This shawl is knit with two skeins of fingering weight yarn and has one size.

This is a 6-page pattern with written instructions.

Instructions:

Beginning at middle neck and working back and forth work a tab CO as follows:

CO 3 sts. Knit 6 rows. Do not turn after the last row. Rotating your little tab clockwise, pick up and knit 3 sts along next two edges. 9 sts.

Notes: M1s in this pattern are worked by casting on a backwards loop. The reason for using this method is that it doesn’t pull your fabric tight (like it does when you pick up a st from the row below) and it doesn’t leave a gaping hole (like it does with a yarn over).

There is a 3-st garter edging, so the first 3 sts and the last 3 sts are always knit (this is included in the instructions). There is always an increase after the first 3 sts and before the last 3 sts on the RS only.

The middle st is always knit (on both the WS and the RS) with an increase on either side (in this case, it’s a YO) on the RS only. Always make sure your marker is right next to the middle st (it can sometimes shift below your YO).

Confused? Don’t worry – it’s all in the instructions!

Section 1 (double moss/seed st)

Note: After working a few rows, you may want to place a removable m on the fabric to mark the RS.
